FGM Protection Order (FGMPO)

Who can apply

The girl/woman at risk, a 'relevant third party' (local authority), or any other person with leave of the court.

Grounds

Protection of a girl against the commission of an FGM offence or against any conduct contemplating FGM. Court can order passport surrender, prohibit travel.

Evidence required

Family travel plans, cultural/family context (carefully and sensitively), school/health professional reports, NSPCC FGM helpline reports.

Duration

As court directs — can be until 18, can be open-ended.

Breach consequences

Criminal offence — up to 5 years.

Legal aid

Available without means test in many circumstances.
